Starting Your Journey with Confidence at Therapy With John

Taking the first step toward therapy is an act of courage. At Therapy With John, we understand how uncertain or even intimidating that first session can feel—especially if you’ve never spoken to a therapist before. That’s why we’ve created this gentle guide to help you feel more prepared, informed, and reassured about what to expect.

1. Booking and Arrival: A Warm Welcome

Your journey begins the moment you get in touch. Whether you book by phone, email, or online, you’ll receive a prompt and friendly response. Once your appointment is scheduled, we’ll send a confirmation with any relevant details (location for in-person sessions or a Zoom link for online sessions).

When you arrive at our Listowel practice—or log in from home—you’ll be welcomed into a calm, safe, and private space. This is your time, and we want you to feel at ease.

2. Getting to Know You

The first session is all about connection—not pressure. Your therapist will gently guide the conversation and ask a few open-ended questions to understand what brought you to therapy. You’re free to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable.

We might explore:

  • What you’re hoping to gain from therapy
  • Any current challenges or concerns
  • Past experiences that may be affecting your present
  • What support systems you have in your life

You don’t need to have all the answers—this is just the beginning of a collaborative journey.

3. Confidentiality: Your Privacy Matters

Confidentiality is a core part of what makes therapy a safe and trustworthy space. Everything you share is kept private and secure. The only exceptions are if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case we are ethically and legally required to take protective steps.

Your therapist will explain these boundaries clearly, so you understand your rights and what to expect.

4. Building the Therapeutic Relationship

One of the most important elements of therapy is the relationship you build with your therapist. During your first session, your therapist will focus on establishing trust, empathy, and a non-judgmental atmosphere.

You’ll also be encouraged to ask questions—about the process, about your therapist’s approach, or anything else you need to feel secure.

5. Goal-Setting and What Comes Next

Together, you and your therapist will begin to outline what your goals for therapy might be. This could be something specific (like reducing anxiety or improving sleep) or more general (like feeling more in control of your emotions).

You’ll also discuss:

  • How often sessions will take place
  • Which therapeutic approaches might be used (e.g., talk therapy, CBT, trauma-focused therapy)
  • Whether short-term or long-term therapy might suit you best

There’s no pressure to decide everything right away. Therapy is flexible and evolves with your needs.

6. Ending the First Session

As the session ends, your therapist may summarise what was discussed and offer reflections or small steps to consider before your next meeting. You’ll have the opportunity to schedule your next appointment and share any final thoughts.

You may feel a mixture of emotions afterward—relief, vulnerability, curiosity, even hope. All of that is completely normal.

Final Thoughts: You’re Not Alone

At Therapy With John, we’re here to walk beside you—whether you’re navigating anxiety, relationship struggles, trauma, or simply seeking personal growth. The first session is just the beginning of what can be a life-changing process of self-discovery and healing.

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start.
